The March 79B is one of the most successful, most desirable, Historic Formula Atlantic chassis. This particular 79B came to the U.S. through Doug Shierson Racing, and raced in the Canadian series. It still has a CASC sticker on its tub, as well as its original chassis tag.
In the early 1990's, the March became part of the Indy Car Experience at PIR, where it was used as a stepping stone to Indy Car racing. The Indy Car Experience subsequently went bankrupt. The bank seized all the property and placed the car, in pieces, in a locked "conex" container to be held as assets to be sold at some point in the bankruptcy proceeding. In approximately summer of 94, Todd Cook of TCE Performances Products in Tempe, AZ, acquired the conex container and it's contents from the bank. Todd reassembled and restored the March.
Jon Gibson next acquired the car in 1994. He took the car to Thunderhill for testing, with the car running great right off the trailer. Thereafter, the car was acquired by Jim McDonald, who ran the car for several years with support from Scott Drnek and Virtuoso Performance.
Most recently, the car was acquired by Donald Sandy and Art Hebert from the San Francisco area. Together with Scott Drnek and Virtuoso Peformance, they won their first time out with the car at the CSRG Annual First Event at Infineon Raceway in 2011.
The March 79B is powered by a 1600 c.c. Cosworth BDD engine with twin 48 DCOE Webers producing 240 horsepower. The engine has five hours on it. Ignition is by MSD with a rev limiter. The Hewland FT 200 five speed gearbox was recently rebuilt, and has only a race weekend on it. The clutch is Tilton with an AP pressure plate. The hydraulics were recently rebuilt. Shocks are Koni. The drive joints have been updated to the stronger CV joints. The rear hubs have been updated with tapered roller bearings. The engine adapter casting is still original and undamaged. The engine mounts have also been stiffened to stiffen the overall chassis. Spares include a set of wheels. The March weighs 1150 lbs, and comes with an HSR logbook.
The March is in excellent condition. It was last run in 2011, and is ready to go. Dyno sheets and setup information are included in the sale.
This March 79B is now eligible for racing with CSRG in Northern California.
